Christmas on the UK’s motorways isn’t one campaign, it’s four. From the first Black Friday deal to the drive home and the January reset, motorway service area audiences shift mindset, journey and spending behaviour at every stage. Here’s how to match your formats, message and spend to each phase on the i-media network.

Build to Black Friday and Cyber Monday runs 9 to 30 November and targets gift-buying that starts earlier than most brands plan for. MSA users are 32% more likely to have bought Christmas presents during Black Friday itself, and 148% more likely to have already bought most of their gifts in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday window rather than treating it as a top-up moment. The recommended format strategy pairs high-impact, close-to-store formats (D6, D48, DM6) that keep deals visible right up to the purchase decision with an RD6 reach builder run across 300 sites in the two-week lead-in, extending frequency ahead of the core event.

‍

Peak Purchase Period runs 1 to 21 December and reaches a still-undecided, still-shopping audience, people who haven’t finished their list, are physically out shopping, or are travelling between other Christmas commitments. MSA users are 21% more likely to say they take inspiration for Christmas gifts from advertising. The same close-to-store formats (D6, D48, DM6) work here, reaching shoppers at a moment of downtime when they’re recharging mid-stop rather than mid-decision.

Driving Home for Christmas runs 22 December to 3 January and catches the travel window itself, when people are away from cities and work and on the move rather than shopping. Car visits rise 42% against an average Saturday, and 60% of MSA visitors take long journeys in the run-up to Christmas, with car visits up 20% versus early December. The format strategy shifts accordingly: DM6 and D48 deliver mass-reach brand presence at the highest-dwell, highest-visitor sites, while D6 and RD6 extend that into roadside frequency along the getaway corridors, keeping brands visible for the whole journey.

‍

January Reset runs 26 December to 10 January and picks up the next wave of behaviour as travel patterns normalise: recruitment, personal finance, wellness and January sales activity, alongside the usual post-Christmas confectionery and electricals spend.

Treated as four distinct phases rather than one long campaign, advertisers can match format, message and spend to exactly where their audience is in the journey, from first gift bought to first New Year’s resolution.
